10kg bag dominates proceedings at second leg of LBT at Kwena Dam

With even more flooded vegetation than expected, all teams had to make adjustments to their strategies.

The second leg of the 2021 Lowveld Bass Trail saw anglers head to a brimming Kwena Dam this past weekend.

Anglers were met by pleasant conditions after a storm hit the region on the Friday night.  The dam level had however picked up since pre-fishing and the game was changed with about two feet of visibility.

With even more flooded vegetation than expected, all teams had to make adjustments to their strategies. It took its toll, with only six of the 43 teams managing a bag limit.
One team however lived up to their name by completely dominating the competition.

Team DST Dominate quickly realised that their plan to target submerged timber in the main dam wasn’t going to pay off, and moved to the river section. By targeting shallow grass with spinnerbaits, it almost immediately yielded 3,27kg, 1kg and 3,64kg catches in short succession, putting them miles in front of the rest.

At this stage they have already passed the final bag weight of the runner up, Bass Wizzard, who only caught their first fish at 13:00 and their fourth in the dying moments of the competition .
The onslaught from DST Dominate continued upon their return to the timber, when they landed a 2,74kg on a jerk bait, which unfortunately later died in the live well and didn’t count.
A solid 2,6kg on a Senko sealed the deal for Jacko Kannemeyer and Niel Deysel, bringing their total bag weight to 10,01kg.

Bass Wizzard’s Wade Lottering and Waldo Greeff capitalised on fish starting to get active in the river section around lunch time, when a thunderstorm approached and bagged two more fish.
They managed to get their fourth fish in the dying minutes of the day and managed to collect at bag of 7,77kg.

Get The Net who ended in third with 5,85kg in the bag, caught all their fish on the banks next to the canal in approximately five feet of water. For almost the entire day they used a black super fluke, except for the last 30 minutes when they reached their five fish limit with a jerk bait.

The next leg will see anglers return to Vygeboom on April 10 where they will hopefully redeem themselves from a shaky first leg earlier this year.
