Athletes bring the heat to winter derby at Penryn

This was an opportunity for coaches to assess their squads to make final selections, as the much-anticipated Uplands/Penryn derby is fast approaching.

Penryn’s sports grounds were abuzz with activity this weekend as the school hosted an internal winter sports derby in preparation for the upcoming winter
sports season.

This was an opportunity for coaches to assess their squads to make final selections, as the much-anticipated Uplands/Penryn derby is fast approaching.
These two schools know no other way to obtain bragging rights in their annual winter sports derby than to fight tooth and nail; therefore, being as prepared as possible is imperative.

“It was great to see our players back on the sports field and giving their best. With our first derby being a few weeks away, all our pupils were determined to impress the coaches by playing well. Thank you to all involved; this past weekend was a great success for Penryn sport,” said head of college sport, Xolani Grootboom.

• On the netball court, the u/15A team beat the u/14A side 6-4, while a mixed junior team gave the u/14Ds a 5-0 thrashing.
• The u/14Bs beat the u/15Bs 4-1, and the u/15A side gave the mixed junior team a
6-1 hiding.
• The u/16A team lost 10-12 to the open girls.
• On the Astro, the first boys team beat the u/16A team 6-2, while the u/15A team narrowly beat the u/14As 4-3.
• The u/15A girls beat the u/14A side 3-0, the second team won 2-0 against the u/16B XI and the u/16A team reigned supreme over the first team.
• No scores were recorded on the tennis courts as on the rugby fields.
• Tag rugby was played, however, which
saw the u/14 blue team beat the green team 15-5. Both the u/15 and u/16 matches ended in a 15-15 tie.
