Kaizer Chiefs charged with misconduct after fans abuse coach at Mbombela Stadium

AmaKhosi fans threw plastic bottles and other objects at coach, Molefi Ntseki, after TS Galaxy won the match 1-0.

The Premier Soccer League Disciplinary Committee (DC) has laid charges against Kaizer Chiefs following misconduct by their fans following their 1-0 loss to TS Galaxy at Mbombela Stadium on Sunday August 20.

Chiefs’ supporters threw objects, mainly plastic bottles, at Coach Molefi Ntseki shortly after the final whistle. This resulted in Ntseki being escorted off the field to the tunnel by the police.

The DC made the announcement on Tuesday August 22.

“I confirm that I preferred charges of misconduct against Kaizer Chiefs Football Club,” said the league’s prosecutor, Advocate Zola Majavu.

“This is as a result of a missile-throwing incident that transpired after the match between Kaizer Chiefs and TS Galaxy this past Sunday. They have been scheduled to appear before the DC on Tuesday August 29. Once the DC has pronounced its verdict and the matter is finalised, I will then give a further update.”

TS Galaxy leap-frogged their way to third place on the DStv Premiership log on Sunday.

The two teams met in a premiership clash that saw Galaxy bag all three points, and left the Soweto giants embarrassed.

Played before a three-quarters capacity crowd of about 30 000, this clash had goals written all over it from the first whistle to the last.

The opening stanza saw Kaizer Chiefs dictating matters and creating clear goal-scoring opportunities, but they were denied by a combination of lack of clinical finishing and bad luck.

As the game progressed in the first half, Galaxy started playing their normal game, which saw them pick up a win in their opening encounter of the season against Cape Town Spurs, and an away goalless draw against Chippa United.

Both teams exchanged blows and played beautifully.

However, when the half-time whistle blew, no one had seen the back of the net.

The second stanza saw Galaxy continuing where they had left off and putting more pressure on the Chiefs.

It wasn’t too long before the Mbombela Stadium crowd erupted.

In the 49th minute of play, Chiefs’ shot-stopper, Brandon Petersen, scored an own goal. A powerful strike by Galaxy’s Higor Vigal rebounded of the woodwork, ricocheted off Petersen and went into the net.

The goal was enough to secure all three points for Sead Ramovic’s troops.

It seemed to ignite the Rockets as they continued playing entertaining football.

They came close to doubling their lead on three occasions, but they failed to finish clinically, allowing Petersen to make some fine saves.

The Chiefs could not find the equaliser they were looking for and finally the referee blew his whistle, signalling the end of the game.

Commenting on SuperSport after the loss, the former Bafana Bafana coach, Ntseki, said, “I am very disappointed with the loss, but I can attribute it to a few things. We didn’t look as sharp as we were supposed to. We were almost second in everything, whether in an attack and not having numbers in the box, to not being aggressive to create counterattacks. On the physical side of it, we were not very sharp, but I think we can always improve on that.”

This loss saw the Chiefs falling to 13th place on the table, while the Rockets smiled all the way to third position with seven points after three games.

The Rockets’ next match is against Royal AM at the Harry Gwala Stadium on August 27.
