While Corné Olivier was considered the outright favourite prior to the weekend, Carl Myburgh was rightfully pegged to be a likely contender for the title.

The annual Club Championship at Mbombela Golf Club presented top class golf on March 8 and 9, with Carl Myburgh finishing as the A Division champion for 2025.

The 2025 Mbombela Club Championship was held last Saturday and Sunday, and both days presented perfect conditions for the golfers to tee it up and let rip, with the course in good nick and the weather overhead more than ideal. The golfers began teeing off at 10:30 on Saturday, with the last group having left the tee box shortly before 13:00.

On day one it was evident that the A Division’s title was a battle between Myburgh and Corné Olivier, who shared the lead after the first round thanks to scores of 73, one-over-par. Ross Tapson led the B Division at six-over and Leon Wait was top of the pops in the C Division with a round of 86.

Olivier and Myburgh continued their battle on Sunday, trading blows to see who would be the first to flinch, and on this occasion it would be Olivier. He carded a two-over round of 74 while Myburgh was able to stay level-par with a round of 72, which meant Myburgh won the 2025 A Division title by two shots.

Tapson proved untouchable in the B Division, carding 83 on Sunday to win by five shots over Macdonald Lelaka. The C Division was the closest of the three, as Wait’s Sunday round of 92 saw him drop to third.

Clive Cotterell rose to second place with rounds of 87 and 89, while Danie Bezuidenhout was able to hold his nerve to win the C Division title courtesy of rounds of 88 and 85. Only five shots separated Bezuidenhout and Wait.

Alieke van Zyl was the runaway winner in the Ladies Division, winning by 23 shots thanks to a six-over round on Saturday and a three-over round on Sunday. Myburgh’s round of 72 was the low-round of the weekend.

In the A Division Luigi Colmanet had the best nett, in the B Division that honour went to Attie van Wyk and in the C Division it was also Bezuidenhout who won best nett. The senior winner was Christo Smith with his tally of 32 points.
