IN PHOTOS: No raining on Lowvelder Golf Challenge’s parade

The second edition welcomed a total of 71 golfers to the course at Mbombela Golf Club.

In spite of early morning rain threatening to cancel yet another edition of the Lowvelder Golf Challenge last week, a large number of golfers refused to let the weather put a damper on the proceedings.

The first Lowvelder Golf Challenge of the year was cancelled in February due to heavy rains. Last Wednesday, the day and the course seemed doomed for the same fate – courtesy of some persistent rain early in the morning.

With tee times booked and golf bags waiting, players watched on with bated breath as the Lowveld skies slowly opened up and the clouds began parting, bringing an end to the downpour. This time the course hadn’t been too adversely affected and it meant that the day’s play could go ahead as planned under overcast skies with some cool weather.

Octopi Smart Solutions and Du Toit-Smuts & Partners Attorneys were on board once more as partners and sponsors, helping to ensure that the day ran smoothly and was once again a success. A total of 71 golfers teed up and let rip on the course last week, a sizeable field that could enjoy the conditions on offer.

Robin Paige enjoyed the weather the most, firing his way to 41 points to win the second round of the 2025 Lowvelder Golf Challenge series. Behind him were three players on 38 points, but it was MJ Mentz who was best on the count-out to take second place, followed by current overall leader Rian Joubert.

The current overall leaders are:

1. Rian Joubert – 72 points
2. Pieter Viljoen Jr – 71
3. Attie van Wyk – 70
4. Corlius Viljoen – 70
5. Sakkie de Lange – 68
6. Johan Ferreira – 68
7. Franchoa Giliomee – 68
8. Ross Tapson – 68
9. Cor Viljoen – 66
10. Corrie van Niekerk – 66
11. Christo André Smith – 66.
