The Uniwisp Urban Challenge offers runners a unique challenge as the routes take them past landmarks around Mbombela.

Uniwisp Running Club member Abednico Mashaba ensured that the Uniwisp Urban Challenge crown stayed in his hands for the third straight year after another triumphant run.

This year’s Uniwisp 2-in-1 Urban Challenge, held on May 3, was the third time the event was held and runners were keen to take on the challenge of running the streets of Mbombela once again. Mashaba dominated the 21.1km half-marathon, powering his way to the finish line in a time of 1:07:25.2 to take the crown for the third successive year.

He was followed over the line by Sibonginkosi Maseko of Bella’s Athletics Club who came second with a time of 1:07:35.7. Sifiso Ndlovu was the third runner to complete the half-marathon, finishing four minutes behind Maseko.

Last year’s ladies runner-up, LowMed runner Nomvula Sithole, was a powerhouse in the ladies race, finishing first with her 1:25:59.9 time. Defending champion Rosaline Isaiah (1:29:54.9) was the second lady this year, followed by Renata Stander (1:30:53.2) in third.
