Lowveld’s Thriston Lawrence shines on return to DP World Tour
His fourth-place finish in Belgium is his best of the season thus far.
After a tough and disappointing start to life on the PGA Tour, the Mbombelan professional golfer, Thriston Lawrence, has had a positive return to the DP World Tour.
Lawrence was in red-hot form on the DP World Tour last year, and finished second on the Race to Dubai rankings at the end of the season to earn his PGA Tour card for the first time. Life Stateside has, however, been tough on Lawrence so far this year, as he has missed the cut in nine of 11 starts, including at the opening two Major Championships – The Masters and The PGA Championship.
In spite of a lack of form in the build-up to his return to European greens, the Lowvelder thrived at the Soudal Open at Rinkven International Golf Club in Antwerp, Belgium. He carded an opening round 66, before going level-par in the second round, and then one-under on moving day to find himself seven shots off the lead.
Lawrence went four-under in the fourth and final round to move up to tied-fourth and finish the week on 10-under-par, a much-needed boost in form on his return to Europe.
“This is where I started about four years ago and I’ve been playing nicely the last four years on this tour, so it’s nice to be back and I think it’s maybe needed for me just to get some confidence,” Lawrence said in an interview with the DP World Tour after his first round.
“I made a couple of long ones that I haven’t made in four months, so that was nice to see. Ball striking was not too bad, but my putting got me going.”
Lawrence will be hoping to keep this form up for the remainder of the season and turn the tide again.
