Kambaku golfer claims title in Lowveld Open
Thobela's nearest competitor was Malelane member Eddie Wilken, who trailed by two shots.
Dino Thobela of Kambaku Golf Club last week dominated on the greens of Malelane Golf Club to win the 2025 Lowveld Open by two shots.
The Lowveld Open was played on May 24, with a sizeable field of 52 golfers teeing it up at Malelane Golf Club to battle it out for first place. With 36 holes of golf lying in wait for the field, matters got under way as early as 07:00 with nothing but blue skies and sunshine overhead.
While in great condition, the course did play tough on the day and the title hopefuls had their hands full navigating Malelane’s tricky nine-hole, 18 tee-box layout. The Onderberg locals made sure to make use of their home-ground knowledge and advantage with positive outcomes in the morning round.
Thobela was the outright leader by one shot, going one-under par in his first 18 holes. Volksrust golfer Alex Pieterse Jr was second on level par while Malelane’s very own Eddie Wilken and Kambaku’s Thami Ngobeni were tied-third.

With much play awaiting him in the afternoon round, Thobela would have to be at his best to hold onto the lead.
Pieterse and Ngobeni’s challenges faded as they went four-over and seven-over in the second round respectively, leaving only Wilken with any chance of pushing Thobela.
But the Kambaku golfer remained cool and calm under pressure, carding a one-over round of 73 over his second 18 holes to hold off Wilken, who himself also shot a 73 in the second round.
This meant Thobela finished as the winner by two shots over Wilken, whose dual rounds of 73 secured him outright second place. Another Malelane member, Janneman Combrink Jr, was in solo third on three-over for the day.
