Four board prizes after SAJCC

Curro Nelspruit's Chinedu Ogunjiofor put on a class-act performance in the South African Junior Chess Championships (SAJCC) held at Birchwood Hotel, Boksburg, a couple of days ago.

Chinedu, who was part of the Ehlanzeni Chess Federation team, competed in his first-ever SAJCC in which he scored seven out of seven games in the u/10 C-category.

Joshua Minifie from Penryn College represented Tshwane Chess in the u/18 championships division. The team did not lose one match and, therefore, received the gold medal.

Ehlanzeni Chess took seven teams to the championships. The u/10, u/16 and u/18 teams placed third overall.

Super grandmaster, Hikaru Nakamura opened the SAJCC on January 4, where a total of 2 212 players from 24 regions that are affiliated to Chess South Africa, took to the board.

Banele Mhango (u/18) scored seven games out of seven. He is the first candidate master in Mpumalanga. Banele, who was ranked 13th before the 2017 African Youth Championships in Egypt, finished third after defeating a higher-rated Egyptian opponent in the final game.
