‘A medal would have been special’

On saturday local javelin thrower Phil-Mar van Rensburg narrowly missed out on a medal at the 21st Commonwealth Games finishing fourth with a season best of 79,83 metres.

The 28-year-old booked his place in the finals with his very first throw of 78 metres.

“A medal would have been special. It was only my third meeting of the year and being able to return with a season-best throw was worthwhile the trip. It was a great experience,” said Van Rensburg.

Neeraj Chopra became the first Indian javelin thrower to claim a gold medal, pulling off a season-best effort of 86,47 metres in the final. Hamish Peacock took silver with a distance of 82,59 metres and the Grenadian, Anderson Peters placed third with a distance 82,20.

Van Rensburg has his sights set on the IAAF World Cup, African Champs and Continental Champs later this year.

Road Cycling commissioner of South Africa and head coach of Team Infinita, Bosseau Boshoff took an impressive line-up of riders to the Gold Coast. Boshoff had been appointed as manager of the team.

Clint Hendricks sprinted his way to a third-place finish. The 26-year-old took bronze behind Australia’s Steele von Hoff and Welshman Jonathan Mould. The first nine cyclists were credited with the same time, 3:57:01, but Hendricks got his wheel in front of Northern Irishman Mark Downey.
