Curro teams are the provinces’ best

For the third consecutive year, the u/14 Mpumalanga Trophy for medium schools remains in Curro Nelspruit's lobby.

Curro hosted the finals on Saturday which saw the defending champs of the Virsekerbeker, Curro’s u/15s, also walking away as the province’s best.

The u/14s had a landslide victory over the team of Secunda, Hoërskool Oosterland, thrashing them 49-0.

Zimele Sibanyonim, Christopher Sjöblom and Willem Blom scored twice for their team.

From the start of the encounter Curro took control of the match, using their mobile forwards to suck in the Oosterland defenders. The backline players did not find much opposition as they crossed the advantage line.

Champions!

Curro led 22-0 at half-time.

In the second half Curro upped their tempo and continued to dominate the collisions and quickly shut down any Oosterland attacks. Every time they had the ball, Curro’s defence tackled them backwards.

This often resulted in turnovers for Curro that turned into point-scoring opportunities.

“As coaches, it is rewarding to see our players improve and implement our game plan. I am particularly proud of the defensive effort in keeping Oosterland scoreless,” said Thinus Strydom and Graeme Stewart.

The u/15 match was a repeat of last year’s Virsekerbeker final, which Curro won 40-5 against Hoërskool Hoogenhout from Bethal.

It was very closely contested and both teams tested one another physically on defence. Curro ran in two tries to Hoogenhout’s one, but Hoogenhout successfully converted and kicked a penalty to go into half-time 10-all.

In the second half, the home side showed character and their forwards took control of the game, setting up quality ball for their backline. The Curro backline was almost unstoppable on front-foot ball and scored another three unanswered tries to win 27-13.
