185 Lowvelders conquer the 2022 Comrades Marathon
Manda Gomes ran an average pace of 05:30 per kilometre over the 90.2km.
Professa Moondisi of City of Mbombela Marathon Club was the first Lowvelder across the finish line in the 2022 Comrades Marathon.
The race was run from Pietermaritzburg to Durban on Sunday.
Moondisi finished in 06:36:45. He was the 85th male runner to finish and 56th in the senior men’s category.
Manda Gomes of Nedbank LVCC was the first female Lowvelder to cross the finish line in the Comrades.
She was her club’s second athlete home in a time of 08:16:43. Gomes was 41st in her category, women 40-49, and the 74th women to finish.
A total of 213 Lowvelders from 19 clubs started the 2022 Comrades. One hundred and eighty-five finished. In the last two hours of the race 115 locals crossed the finish line.
Lowveld runners brought home seven silver, 20 Bill Rowen, 45 Robert Mtshali, 36 bronze and 77 Vic Clapham medals.
The first woman from City of Mbombela Marathon Club to finished the Comrades was Thandeka Hlatshwayo. Her time of 08:50:21 secured her the 141st place for women and 64th place for senior women (18-39).
Moris Maiga was Bella’s first man home in 06:47:30. He was the 41st senior man 40-49 and 109th man overall in the race.

Bella’s first woman to finish the 2022 Comrades was Tlangelani Mthimkhulu in 09:20:19. She was the 124th women in the 40-49 category.
The SAPS’ Mjabuliseni Sibanyoni was the best men’s runner from the club, completing the race in 07:09:11 for 119th place in the senior category.
Sibongile Hlophewas the first local SAPS woman to finish in 10:18:41.
Seth Dlamini of Correctional Services was the 171st man 50-59 to complete the 90.2km in a time of 08:44:18.
The first man from Nedbank LVCC to cross the finish line was Lovers Hlatshwayo in a time of 07:23:48. He finished 133rd in the 40-49 category and was the 336th man home overall.
Nelspruit Marathon Club’s Samuel Makamu was the first male athlete from his club to finish the ultramarathon. He was the 149th man in the 40-49 category in 07:37:42.

His teammate, Lorraine Roets was Nelspruit’s first female athlete to finish. He time was 09:47:49. She placed 197th in the senior women’s category.
Stephen Collins of Run Walk for Life Mpumalanga was the club’s best male runner. His time of 08:55:21 secured him 966th place in the senior men’s category.
Run Walk for Life Mpumalanga’s Shelley Parnell was her club’s top female athlete. Her time was 11:16:14.
Legogote Villagers’ Johannes Sibuyi was the White River club’s first man. He finished in 09:26:21.
Christine Stoppel-Grové was the first Legogote women to finish in 09:43:19.
Tumelo Kgwete was the SANDF Mpumalanga’s only and first runner to cross the Comrades finish line in 09:41:53.
The first Ngodwana Marathon Club man to complete the race was Manana Nene in 08:58:34.
Onderberg Marathon Club’s only representative in the Comrades, Anelise Naudé, finished in 11:31:43.

Amos Sibiya of Kruger Park Marathon Club was his club’s first male athlete home in 08:10:33. His teammate, Sandra Mashaba, was the first female from the club in 09:52:40.
Barberton Marathon Club’s Lucky Ubisse was the town’s only runner at the Comrades. His finishing time was 08:48:10.
Rufus Sibinde of Hazyview Marathon Club was the club’s first man to finish in 09:22:38.
Lowmed’s top male runner was Leroux Jordaan in 08:52:15. His teammate, Celeste Oosthuizen, was the club’s first female runner in 10:53:51.
The last Lowvelder over the finish line was Hellen Snell of Bella’s who completed the race with 23 seconds to spare.
