Sailors take over Da Gama for Easter

Forest Sailing Club recently hosted the Easter Regatta once again, with sailors flying their sails on Da Gama Dam for three days of great sailing action as an Easter treat for the club's members.

The annual Easter Regatta hosted by the Forest Sailing Club was once again held over the Easter weekend, with local sailors taking to Da Gama’s waters for a glorious weekend of sailing.

This year’s regatta was held between Friday and Sunday, March 29 and 31. The weather over the Easter weekend made things a bit tough for the sailors, with consistently good wind lacking for much of the time. This was an issue on the first two days in particular, as three races had to be cancelled or abandoned due to poor wind.

Despite a slightly delayed start for the first race, Sunday was thankfully a much better day for sailing. The wind was ever-present, but not gusting out of proportion, and the skies above were scattered with clouds to lessen the impact of the sun, so conditions were perfect.

A total of four races were held on Sunday, bringing the weekend’s total number of races to nine. One of the results (each sailor’s worst result) would be discarded, and the other eight counted. Come the end of the third day, the winners had been decided and the club’s best sailors were rewarded.

Reece Robertson was the overall winner for this year’s Easter Regatta, followed by Arthur Powell in second and Ken Grossmith in third.

Further winners were split into three categories, and they were as follows:

Keeler class:
1. Ken Grossmith
2. Marc Derfoldy
3. Anthony Theron.

Open class:
1. Reece Robertson
2. Arthur Powell
3. Kirsty Robertson.

Cat class:
1. Robbie Robertson
2. Meiring van der Merwe
3. Hano van Rooyen.
