Competitive chess makes its return to Curro Nelspruit like a knight in shining armour

Just under 200 chess players were in action at Curro Nelspruit.

Curro Nelspruit hosted the annual TRACN4 Curro Chess Tournament on Saturday May 18.

One hundred and ninety-one chess enthusiasts, schools and clubs from around the Lowveld and even KZN took part in age groups from U10 to U21, and showed off their chess skills.

This was the biggest turnout for a Curro Nelspruit chess tournament since before Covid.

The tournament was a big success, and some new arbiters were granted the opportunity to complete their norms on the day.

“A big thank you to the organisers, judges and attendees for their participation. We look forward to the next tournament and extend a big invitation to even more players to attend in 2025,” said Linda Janse van Rensburg, head of the primary school.

“We are proud of the way that the players conducted themselves. We can learn so many lessons from chess. In the grand arena of life, we are all players on the board. Each move we make shapes our journey, influencing our destiny. Just like in chess, every decision counts; every move holds significance. It’s not merely about moving pieces on a board; it’s about strategy, foresight and wisdom. Remember, every setback is an opportunity to learn, to grow, to evolve. Just as in a game of chess, where every lost piece teaches us resilience, perseverance and the importance of adaptation.”
