The funds raised at the SAPS golf day will be used for the further education of the children of police officers who have lost their lives.

Members of the SAPS and their supporters and friends executed a joint operation to chase a few fugitive golf balls for a good cause at Mbombela Golf Club on Friday, October 8.

The SAPS Education Trust (SAPSET) SAPS Golf Day was a major success. The purpose of the day was to raise funds for the trust. “SAPSET supports the education needs of children of police officers who tragically lost their lives in the line of duty,” said event organiser Captain Pieter Smit.

“The trust plays a critical role in ensuring that these children are not left behind, and that their futures are secured through access to quality education – an enduring legacy of the sacrifice made by their parents,” he added.

“The SAPS is committed to supporting the families left behind and this golf day will contribute some of the funds to do so.”

The 18 holes at Mbombela Golf Club were thoroughly investigated by the players. No alibis could be provided for failing to have a good time or enjoy the camaraderie.

A few strong leads that the players followed up on led them to a raid on the 19th hole, where they were incarcerated late into the evening.

“I want to thank all the sponsors and players who participated. Because of them, we are able to hand over a significant amount to SAPSET. Also, thanks go to Lowvelder for the assistance in advertising the event and providing coverage,” Smit concluded.

Without the caddies, no golf day would be a success. After play concluded, these hard-working men each received a loaf of bread and a cold drink sponsored by Sunbake.

The competition was played in a betterball Stableford format, a light sentence for the higher-handicapped players. Jannie Liebenberg and Tanya Lurie were taken into custody to be awarded the prize for first place on 59 points.
