Jenny Davies – from a wheelchair to the national champs

Jenny learnt to walk and play bowls again.

LVCC Bowls Club member Jenny Davies took part in the Bowls South Africa 2026 Disability Nationals in Hartenbos, Mossel Bay from April 11 to 18.

Jenny was classified disabled after a serious motor vehicle accident in 2014, which kept her in hospital for eight months. She spent almost two years in a wheelchair and on crutches learning to walk again.

She suffered severe damage to her legs and feet, a crushed vertebra in her lower spine and bleeding on the brain at the time.

At one stage she thought she would never walk again, but as the years rolled on, she became determined to gain back her life and attributes her healing, ability and determination to the grace of God.
During the competition she played at three different bowling clubs, namely, Groot Brak, Mossel Bay and Hartenbos in the Western Cape.

The competition this year was stiff with a number of Protea players in the mix. This is Jenny’s second year of participation in these competitions. Last year, she won a bronze medal in the singles and a bronze with her partner Cielie Willemse (from Nelspruit Bowling Club).

This year she won a bronze medal in the singles and a silver medal with her new partner, 21-year-old Chané Brink from Atlas Bowling Club in Kempton Park.

In disability bowls, Jenny is a B8 and Chane a B7 category. The higher the category, the more able bodied you are.

Jenny’s husband Charles Davies had been coaching her with a group of new bowlers and players from the Lowveld Development team for the past six months. Although she herself is qualified bowls coach, Charles suggested she take a break from coaching to focus totally on her skills for the nationals.
