Local athlete’s world championship draws to a close
The IAAF's championships for athletes younger than 18 featured one from the Lowveld.
MBOMBELA – As the International Association of Athletics Federations’ (IAAF) World Youth Championships for u/18’s drew to a close in Cali, Colombië yesterday, the only Lowveld athlete who qualified to participate was left disappointed.
Hoërskool Bergvlam’s Maudas Banda was one of only 24 athletes who represented South Africa in the championships. Unfortunately he did not qualify for the final of his event, long jump.
During the competition last week, he said he managed a distance of 7,04 metres. His personal best is 7,37 metres.
Maudas (17) was selected to the national team after qualifying at the recent South African open championships in Tlokwe.
