Kids get moving at fun sports day
Teachers at Komatipoort Care Centre put a practical spin on lessons at their fun sports day last Friday.
According to Komati Care Centre principal, Marietjie Poulton, pupils had just finished the part of their curriculum dealing with the body, and the teachers thought it a good idea to demonstrate all kinds of body movements by organising a sport event.
The kids, dressed in green T-shirts from a donor in the Netherlands, stood neatly in their lines, excited to participate.
Every child took part in items like hurdles, “carry the heavy bucket”, sprints and motorbike racing. Afterwards they were treated to snacks, cupcakes and cold drinks.
Poulton also made 60 medals and the proud look on each little face upon receiving it was something to remember.
There have been several developments at the care centre over the past few months thanks to donations. Towards the end of 2015 the school committee was able to refurbish the kitchen, add a new classroom and erect a palisade fence around the property, thanks to money from the United Kingdom.
With the addition of the new classroom they have been able to accommodate an additional 10 to 12 children. The total number of kids under their care is now 60, which is the maximum they can cater for with the existing infrastructure.
Thanks to a donation from Belgium, three volunteer teachers have been enrolled in a training programme dedicated to teaching best practices in the early childhood development programme. According to Poulton, it will assist in providing the children with excellent preschool grounding.
A visitor to the centre remarked on the great care children receive at the centre. “It warms my heart to see the smiling, happy and stimulated faces.”
