Records aplenty tumble at MJ Zwane Independent Schools Athletics meet

This year marked the fifth time the MJ Zwane meet was held in honour of a former Uplands pupil that passed away in 2019.

No fewer than nine new records were set at the 2025 MJ Zwane Independent Schools Athletics meet at Penryn on February 15, at which Uplands emerged victorious.

This year marked the fifth hosting of this meet, which is named after former Uplands pupil Mxolisi Zwane Waka Sambo Jr. Mxolisi was affectionately known as MJ before his sudden and tragic passing at the age of 12 in an accident on his way to the independent schools athletics meet in 2019. The meet was named in his honour the following year.

It was Penryn’s turn to host this year and they were one of nine schools to take part. They were joined by Uplands, Curro Nelspruit, Riverview Preparatory School, Curro Meridian, Curro Academy Mbombela, Flamboyant School, Summerhill Preparatory School and St Peter’s School.

The very best athletes from all of the participating primary schools converged on Penryn’s track and field to battle for glory. It was a great day of athletics. Five different schools had athletes break or equal records, showcasing their talents.

Uplands’s athletes set three new records and equalled one. Curro Nelspruit broke three records, while Curro Academy, Riverview and Curro Meridian each had an athlete break one. It was ultimately Uplands that emerged victorious on the day, earning the most medals. Curro Nelspruit had the second most, followed by Penryn.
