Make memories and have fun at Uplands
With the Uplands Festival this weekend, you'll have no need to make weekend plans to keep the family happy. The festival will have lots to do and see and you'll be able to help a charity too.
WHITE RIVER – The Eastview BMW Uplands Festival at Uplands College from May 30 to June 1 is more than just a school fund-raiser. There is a lot taking place to help the local community and to ensure that the environment is cared for.
On the community front the Uplands MTB event, which promises to be as exciting as ever, has generated income for a local wire worker Edwin who has handmade 700 wire bicycles to be issued to every finisher at the MTB race. A distance of 75 kilometres of single tracks and jeep tracks has been cleared by a local track-building team under the guidance of Leonard Fakude, providing work for the unemployed. A depot at the MTB registration tent will be in place for the collection of used cycling kit (helmets, shoes, clothes and much more) for community initiatives promoting cycling in rural areas and to top it all the Ngala rangers will ride at the event to raise money for rhino. All participants are encouraged to ride for a cause at the MTB event.
On the green front all styrofoam cups and containers have been banned as this is one material that cannot be recycled. Glass, plastic, paper and tin generated at the festival will be processed in the recycling facility. A depot for electronic waste will be positioned at the main entrance for collection of old computers, cartridges and any electrical devices that are no longer in use.
Tony Fredriksson, a well-known local artist who only works with wood, will donate proceeds of his work sold at the art festival to the Uplands Environmental Committee for its tree-planting initiatives.
On the entertainment side of things, award-winning theatre shows are coming to town. Rave reviews, combined with enthusiastic audience response, translate to box-office magic. Attendees can look forward to performances like The Return of Elvis Du Pisanie with a story that moves from pure nostalgia through extreme heartache to unbridled joy, Big Boys 2 with its laugh-a-minute script, MAfrika healing the world through the eyes of a six-year old, Chilli Boy who tells a story about an Indian who was reincarnated as a white gangster from Boksburg, The Joy Workshop showing you how to be an awesome example for humankind and strictly for adults, a refreshing piece of naughty fun, The Epicene Butcher. Tickets to these shows range from R60 to R80.
So whether you enjoy the outdoors on a mountain bike, appreciate art or enjoy watching a live show or band, by attending the Uplands Festival you will indirectly be supporting a good cause.
