Harley bikers go nuts for cancer awareness

More Balls Than Most (MBTM) has committed itself to creating an awareness about prostate and testicular cancer, the former being the leading cancer among males.

However, with early diagnosis and treatment, it can be, and has been overcome by many men. Testicular cancer, most common in men aged 15 to 35, has been cured in 90% of reported cases. It is suggested that one in 10 men will develop prostate cancer, so regular testing is imperative for the over 40s.

Harley-Davidson South Africa has decided to join and support the MBTM campaign and on November 1, 10 dealerships countrywide participated in a mass ride called Snors for a Cause Motorcade. After the local ride in which about 50 bikers participated, everyone was introduced to the 2015 Harley-Davidson range of models.

I rode pillion with Big Five Harley’s Johann Schönfeldt along a route of about 60 kilometres which took us out on the Malalane Road, left to towards the airport and from there back to Mbombela. And with the theater-style seat of the Touring Ultra Limited on which we rode, I had an excellent all-round view and it was interesting to watch how the marshals’ and the road captain managed this large pack of riders along the route and at the various traffic lights and turn-offs. And, I realised that each rider in the pack had to be focused and aware of everything around him so as to ensure everyone’s safety.

Before departure though, the route was explained in detail. John Pascoe of the Harley-Davidson HQ, all the way from Cape Town, declared Harley’s commitment to making this an annual event. It will also donate at least R50 000 to MBTM by end of December.

You can participate in this effort by competing in the Street 750 competition – details and T&Cs can be found on Harley-Davidson Africa Facebook page. The competition will run from November 15 to December 15. Beware though, that you will have to, for starters, mo that moustache! Yes in typical Harley legend style, this is the stuff legends are made of. Be a devil and just do it – now!

And of course then, after you have mowed the snor, you have to visit Big Five Harley to inspect those marvellous new machines. The highlight of the new range, the Road Glide Special, caused quite a stir but sadly, with a price tag of some R350 000, we mere mortals can but drool.

On the road though I enjoyed Johann’s rock collection from the ‘60s including songs like “Band on the run” which was blaring through a set of high-quality speakers built into the console. Not so sure about his baby-booming status, but at least he has a taste for solid rock music (not noise – music) and of course, a good bike.
