Lots of Land Rover fun in the Lowveld

No fewer than 22 local Land Rovers formed part of the first outing of the Lowveld Land Rover Club in January.

The route from Mbombela went past Rosehaugh on the road to Lydenburg, where there was a stop to look at the historic road bridge over the Nels River. The group then continued to Rhenosterhoek where a local Land Rover enthusiast, Richard Herring led the way past some of the most spectacular forestry roads on the eastern escarpment.

Crossing the Long Tom Pass, the convoy continued down the mountain following the upper course of the Sabie River into the Sabie River Valley west of the town. Avoiding the main tarred roads the group drove from Ceylon to the idyllic Christmas Pools in the mountains above Graskop, courtesy of York Timber.

One of the main reasons for establishing a collective such as the Lowveld Land Rover Club is the access to such rarely visited routes and sites that are negotiable, says one of the organisers, Lorraine Dicker.

All Land Rovers currently on the market were represented on this outing. Also included were some previous models with a vintage Series 2 short wheelbase or 90 of 1962 as the oldest.
The route was fairly easy though wet and slippery in some places. This allowed for some serious puddle chasing among the more adventurous in the group.

The next outing will be on Sunday February 15. The route will be revealed soon. To join the Lowveld Land Rover Club mailing list, contact Lorraine on 083-637-0939 or Marius at
