2015 Autodealer Women’s Choice Awards

There were many oohs, aahs and puzzled looks throughout the morning as the ladies made their way from one vehicle to the other, often wrecking their brains as they completed the score sheets.

Modern women have become very independent in terms of spending their disposable income. And with cars and or
property being some of the largest investments in anyone’s budget, the purpose of the Autodealer Lowveld Women’s
Choice Awards (AWCA) is to introduce women from all walks of life to various vehicle brands within a particular
segment on the same day. Both Autodealer Lowveld and the AWCA have received various accolades over the past few years. In the first event for 2015 we introduced 10 ladies to eight different SUVs. They were allowed to drive them one after the other over the same distance and route, and were then asked to answer 10 questions related to these vehicles and give each a score out of 10. This information was then processed, presenting us with an impression of what the ladies thought of each vehicle.

The event was held at the Southern Sun Emnotweni in Mbombela that also sponsored a scrumptious threecourse
lunch. “And if you didn’t know this, you are most welcome to walk in – no reservation required – at the hotel
for breakfast, lunch or dinner even if you are not a guest at the hotel,” said general manager Michelle Higgo.
Well-known actor, Ben Kruger was also in attendance on the day and presented each participant with a copy of
his cookbook, Wild & Warm. His favourite vehicle is the Citroën Cactus.

There were many oohs, aahs and puzzled looks throughout the morning as the ladies made their way from one vehicle to the other, often wrecking their brains as they completed the score sheets.

Here is how the vehicles were rated:
• Citroën Cactus – excellent
• Honda CR-V – excellent
• Nissan X-Trail – excellent
• Opel Mokka – excellent
• Lexus NX – excellent +
• Citroën Picasso – excellent
• SsangYong Korando – excellent
• Mazda CX-5 – excellent +.

The ladies all agreed that driving cars back-to-back, while also having access to knowledgeable sales people to explain all the features and more, is a winning format. It left them more informed and clued up than
they thought it would. Antoinette Hennop, sales manager at Mazda Nelspruit was voted the best brand representative on the day. Autodealer Lowveld thanks all the participating dealers, Southern Sun Emnotweni, Hi-Q and Ben Kruger for their sponsorships. Of course, the only thing which remains, is for you to go and drive these vehicles at the various dealerships.

Opel Mokka

The bold design of the Mokka filled at least one of the participants with a sense of nostalgia as it reminded her of the first Opel she owned. The magic is still there. The all-new Opel Mokka – Opel’s first-ever sub-compact SUV – made its South African debut at the end of March. Mokka, which has received unprecedented international acclaim with orders in Europe in 2014 easily surpassing the 240 000-unit mark, is the third of the ‘new Germans’ from Opel to be launched in South Africa.

“The all-new Opel Mokka is an exciting addition to the Opel portfolio and follows Adam and Corsa as a truly adaptable lifestyle option,” comments Christopher Cradock, Opel brand manager at GMSA. The vehicle’s high levels of quality, driver aids and safety technology, as well as versatility place Mokka firmly at the top of this segment.  Mokka is aimed at consumers who have active lifestyles and a taste for adventure. In this regard it is perfectly matched to the aspirational lifestyles of the target groups, but more than that it offers a quality alternative to those customers who live urban lifestyles and fully appreciate the high seating position, extra space, versatility and go-anywhere nature of an SUV. The high level of specification in the new Mokka is backed by an efficient turbocharged petrol engine giving all models sporty driving dynamics.

The Opel Mokka is available as a four-model range with a choice of two trim levels and a choice of 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmissions with front-wheel drive only. Opel’s proven 1,4-litre turbocharged petrol engine does duty in all four derivatives. The engine produces 103kW@4 900-6 000r/min and a usable 200Nm@1 850-4 900r/min. “As a compact luxury SUV the Opel Mokka straddles the popular and growing SUV B and C segments of the market in South Africa. With this vehicle we are bringing German engineering, state-of-the-art technology and safety features from larger and more expensive SUVs into a market space dominated by emerging products. Our trio of new Germans – the Adam, Corsa and Mokka – have democratised luxury technology and life-saving safety features by making them accessible to consumers in the A, B and C segments of our market at reasonable prices.”

Mokka’s compact proportions disguise its spacious interior which is characte-rised by high levels of standard specification, making Mokka a true all-round vehicle where a vast array of lifestyle applications can be easily adapted in a sleek, modern, new German package.

Honda C-RV

The CR-V’s success is underscored by numerous international and local awards, including being identified by the JD Powers CSI and IQS ratings as SA’s most satisfying and best-quality SUV, while it featured as SA’s best compact SUV and best sport recreational vehicle in the annual TopCar best buy guide. While the silhouette of the Honda CR-V remains unchanged, significant changes to the front and the rear of the compact SUV have created a bolder, more progressive appearance. Style and functionality are at the core of the CR-V’s redesigned interior, which features a brand-new seven-inch touchscreen display as the interface for the vehicle’s infotainment system on all models except the entry-level Comfort. However, Bluetooth-based connectivity is standard across the entire model range.

The seven-inch display offers a broad range of features, including extensive connectivity to smart devices and smartphone-style functionality. The system supports the familiar pinch, swipe and tap interface common to current-generation smartphones, and can be customised by choosing from a selection of two colour schemes. Under the 2015 CR-V’s skin, upgrades to the chassis have resulted in improved ride and handling characteristics.

The 2015 Honda CR-V range offers a comprehensive array of safety and security features. Standard across all models are ABS anti-lock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD) and emergency brake assist (EBA). Vehicle stability assist (VSA), emergency stop light system, front and rear fog lamps and LED daytime running lights are also standard, while the automatic transmission models also gain hill start assist (HSA). The flagship 2.4 Exclusive also adds adaptive cruise control (ACC), lane departure warning (LDW), lane keep assist (LKA) and collision mitigation braking system (CMBS) to the already extensive list.

The revised 2015 Honda CR-V range consists of six models spanning four specification levels, two engine choices and two transmission options. The entry point to the CR-V range is the 2.0 Comfort, powered by Honda’s 1 997cc four-cylinder i-VTEC engine. The unit produces a maximum power output of 114kW and 192Nm. The Elegance is also the first of the new-generation CR-V models to be fitted with a seven-inch touchscreen-driven infotainment system, which includes a six-speaker sound system, as well as a USB socket and an auxiliary audio jack. One step up from the two Elegance models is the CR-V 2.4 Executive, which is powered by Honda’s proven 2 354cc four-cylinder i-VTEC engine. The power unit is credited with a maximum output of 140kW and 220Nm linked to a five-speed automatic gearbox is the only transmission choice, while all-wheel drive is standard.

The CR-V 2.4 Exclusive AWD is the new flagship of the range and while it is mechanically and dynamically identical to the 2.4 Executive version, it takes the already comprehensive equipment list up a further notch by including an array of advanced safety features.

Citroën C4 Cactus

Fusing functionality and aesthetics, the C4 Cactus introduces originality in a sector earmarked by convention, offering more design, more comfort and more useful technology, coupled to more efficiency, more eco-friendliness, and more innovation.

Innovation is at the very core of the new Citroën C4 Cactus. The striking design exudes a purity of purpose with smooth, wind-cheating surfaces and powerful, graphic lines and elements. The rounded front, provides a bold introduction to the design, while the flanks feature one of the Cactus’ key
innovations: the airbump – a pliable protective panel that protects while adding compelling visual interest. The C4 Cactus also features a roof-mounted airbag ( a world first) for the front passenger in the interests of creating more space without compromising safety, while intelligent packaging links compact dimensions to expansive interior accomo-dation.

The dashboard ergonomics with its seven-inch (17,8 cm) full-colour touch screen, creates an uncluttered surface that adds to the cabin’s expansive ambience. Specification levels are generous across the entire C4 Cactus range. Two levels of equipment – Feel and Shine – are offered for the South African market, but even the more affordable Feel version benefits from an extensive list of standard equipment. That list includes air conditioning, a
four-speaker audio system with tuner and MP3 playback, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free telephony and audio streaming, cruise control with speed limiter, electrically operated front windows and exterior mirrors, and a multifunction steering wheel.
At the entry level, the 1,2-litre PureTech unit has a maximum power output rating of 60kW and a 118Nm torque peak, while achieving a combined cycle fuel consumption figure of just 4,6 litres/100km. The more powerful 1,2-litre PureTech Turbo e-THP engine features turbo-charging to boost output to 81kW and 205Nm. The result is swifter performance, but not at the cost of fuel efficiency: consumption remains impressive at just 4,7 litres/100km for the combined cycle.

The new C4 Cactus extends its innovation to its array of comprehensive safety equipment. Passive measures include six airbags – front driver, roof-mounted front passenger, as well as dual side- and dual curtain airbags. Active safety systems standard across the C4 Cactus range include ABS brakes with electronic brake force distribution (EBD) and emergency braking assistance (EBA), electronic stability control (ESC), while the 81kW Feel and Shine models add hill assist to the list. The C4 Cactus has already received a number of awards which indicate that it may just be the game-changer for Citroën.

Citroën C4 Picasso

At launch the Peugeot Citroën South Africa (PCSA) managing director, Francis Harnie said, “The launch of the C4 Picasso MPV is the first step in a programme which will increase the Citroën range of innovative, trend-setting cars.” The C4 offers two derivatives – the Seduction and Intensive – both powered by a 1,6-litre e-HDi 115 turbodiesel engine developing 85kW and 270Nm. Power goes to the front wheels via a six-speed manual transmission.

“This Picasso MPV is built on brand new underpinnings, known as the EMP2 platform, with EMP standing for efficient modular platform,” said the general manager – marketing of PCSA, Grant Bowring. “The design team in France has coined the term ‘Technospace’ for the overall design philosophy behind the spacious new Citroën C4 Picasso. “Besides the lightweight platform, the Picasso also has an aluminium bonnet and composite rear hatch. The exterior styling is pacesetting, with bold, modern lines tending towards a futuristic look with a shorter front overhang and wider track, giving it an aggressive, road-hugging stance. It certainly does not look like the average “mom’s taxi.” Uniquely styled alloy wheels are highlights of the exterior styling. The Seduction shows off 16-inch Viper wheels and the Intensive sports 17-inch Anaconda rims, both with Michelin tyres.

The Citroën designers and stylists have also been given the opportunity to showcase their ability with an innovative interior for the new C4 Picasso. The overall look and feel tends towards minimalist, with a clean looking fascia, a multi-purpose 7-inch touch screen in the centre of the dashboard and a 12-inch optional panoramic HD screen. Citroën describes it as a “full digital driving interface.” There are front park-assist sensors on both models while the Intensive model also has the park-assist system for easy parallel parking. Storage spaces abound, including two beneath the floor of the second-row seats. Luggage space is very generous with a 537-litre capacity below the parcel shelf which can be enlarged to a very spacious 1 851 litres when the rear-seat backrests are folded forward. In addition the powered tailgate can be opened remotely at the press of a button.

As one would expect from Citroën, there is a vast array of standard safety and security equipment, including ABS brakes with electronic brake force distribution (EBD), emergency braking assistance (EBA), electronic stability control (ESC) with intelligent traction control, automatic activation of the hazard warning lights in case of rapid deceleration or impact, six air bags and a deflated tyre indicator.

Mazda CX-5

The Mazda CX-5 initially launched in 2012 was the first vehicle to introduce Mazda’s KODO Soul of motion design to the South African market. Since Mazda Southern Africa launched in October 2014 with two additional engines to the line-up, the CX-5 has seen great sales success.

On the Individual and Akera models, new-generation LED headlamps and gunmetal 19-inch alloy wheels are introduced, giving the exterior a more premium design expression. The MZD Connect infotainment system; a simple to operate system that allows easy access to Internet radio streaming and social networking services that Mazda drivers consider essential, forms part of the enhancement across the model range. Mazda’s managing director, David Hughes said, “The updated CX-5 reflects our latest technologies and the new-generation line-up responds to the needs of an even wider range of customers.”

The 2015 Mazda CX-5 is the first Mazda model in South Africa to adopt the adaptive LED headlights (ALH) on the Individual and Akera models, a new-generation headlamp system which implements LED array glare-free high-beam technology. The model line-up continues with the 2,0-litre and a 2,5-litre petrol engine as well as two versions of the 2,2-litre twin turbodiesel engine. In both manual and automatic transmissions, SKYACTIV body and chassis to deliver precise responsiveness coupled with efficient engine performance. The 2,0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine delivers a sporty 121kW and 210Nm of torque, using only 6,4 litres of fuel every 100km. The muscular 2.5 litre petrol engine punches out 141kW and 256Nm, yet uses just 7,4 litres of fuel per 100km. In these SKYACTIV-G petrol engines, the precise direct injection’s multi-hole system minimises fuel use.

The lower powered 2,2-litre four-cylinder diesel engine produces 110kW and 380Nm while the higher powered 2,2-litre four-cylinder diesel engine produces 129kW and a muscular 420Nm of torque; both using just 5,7 litres of fuel per 100km. A new safety measure sees the addition of the lane keep assist (LKA) on the Individual and Akera models which assists by adding a slight amount of torque to steer the vehicle back into the lane. This
functionality operates at speeds over 65km/h. The CX5 is feature filled: six built-in SRS airbags, dynamic stability control (DSC) incorporating traction control system (TCS) as standard, ABS and electronic brake-force distribution (EBD) and emergency brake assist (EBA) boosting stopping power at just the right time. The 2015 Mazda CX-5 is backed up by a three-year unlimited kilometre factory warranty. To provide complete peace of mind motoring, a three-year roadside assistance, a three-year service plan and a five-year corrosion warranty are also included.

Lexus NX

The NX symbolises a new direction for Lexus. As Calvyn Hamman, senior vice-president of sales & marketing, points out, “The brand’s focus is on providing design-driven, driver-rewarding vehicles underpinned by Lexus’ advanced engineering and dynamic, efficient power trains.”

But the newcomer is not just about the show – it’s got the go to match. It features the new 175kW, 2,0-litre turbocharged direct injection petrol engine – nine years in development and matched to a newly developed six-speed automatic transmission with a drive mode select system. A combined cycle fuel economy of 7,9 litres/100km with dynamic torque control AWD is achievable while CO2 emission levels are pegged at 184g/km. In a world first, the cylinder head, four-into-two, exhaust manifold and twin-scroll turbocharger have been integrated on the new 2,0-litre engine. Another technological tour-de-force featuring on the NX 200t is the dynamic torque control all-wheel drive system, which maximises traction and cornering stability, while securing the best possible fuel efficiency. Another fascinating piece of design trivia relates to the LED puddle lamps which provide additional light for occupants – fade-in and fade-out timing has been engineered to coordinate with other lamps (such as the interior dome lamp) to provide a sense of harmony and luxury.

Lexus NX 200t has a new sequential-shift six-speed automatic transmission paired with a sophisticated electronically controlled proactive all-wheel drive system. Sequential shifting can be initiated via the gear lever or paddle shifters on the steering wheel. Another Lexus-first feature is the preloaded front differential. The NX is also available in a hybrid – the NX 300h hybrid power train was designed to achieve excellent fuel economy
coupled with enjoyable acceleration and agile driving. The Lexus series parallel hybrid power train features a 2,5-litre Atkinson cycle engine and a multi-mode six-step electronically controlled all-gear continuously variable transmission (E-CVT) with sequential shiftmatic change and a unique kick-down feature.

The new NX has a comprehensive suite of active and passive safety systems – it is all there. EX and F-Sport models receive a 10-speaker audio system (an eight-speaker system for the E grade) with a digital (Class-D) amplifier.
