Maroela Makiti does it again

This fund-raising event is hosted by the church annually in the last week of January to raise money for its needs and for those less privileged.

MBOMBELA – The Hervomde Kerk’s annual Maroela Makiti, which was held on Saturday, January 30, at Hoërskool Bergvlam, was a roaring success yet again.

This fund-raising event is hosted by the church annually in the last week of January to raise money for its needs and for those less privileged.

Although the festival has scaled down, having not invited national stars to perform like in previous years, and being held in the form of a bazaar, it didn’t disappoint. Festivalgoers attended the day to choose from the many delicious food items and maroela products on offer. The handcrafted goods were also popular.

There was something for everyone. According to Eksteen Botes, a minister in the church, this year they decided to hold a sevens rugby tournament as part of the event. It was sponsored by Nkomazi Fuel, Forever Resorts and Sembcomb Silulumanzi, among others.

“We saw it fit to include the tournament as one of the activities because other than the sport’s ability to promote healthy living, it would also help to raise more funds for the church,” said Botes.

For the past 12 years the church has successfully hosted the event and raised funds in the process. “We have received great support from the community at large. For that we are grateful as we have been able to fund most of our projects,” added Botes.

He said the church believes in a society that preaches love and peace to its people and it is for that reason that some of the profits are used to improve the lives of needy members of the community.
