Shopping for a sub-R100 000 car? This is what you can get!

Are you in the market for a used car - and shopping in the R50 000 to R100 000 price range?

An analysis of AutoTrader data reveals exactly what car you can get.

Furthermore, the data even provide a breakdown as per the six most popular body types, namely hatchbacks, sedans, sport utility vehicles (SUVs), single-cabs, double-cabs and coupés.

According to George Mienie, AutoTrader CEO, this data will provide consumers with practical insight into exactly what kind of car they can get in the R50 000 to R100 000 price bracket.

“However, we have gone one step further and provided this data per body type. This could sway a consumer’s purchasing decision.

Maybe he or she was considering a sedan, for instance, but discovers that a coupé could be a far more enticing proposition,” he explains.

The data – which includes the average year, mileage and price – is based on the most listed cars on AutoTrader in the month of October 2020.

AutoTrader is the largest digital automotive marketplace in South Africa. As such, it provides unparalleled insight into car-buying patterns in the country.

One of the most interesting things to emerge from the data is the range of really good deals on offer – especially if a buyer is happy to settle for a slightly older car that may have fairly high mileage.

Take, for instance, the two coupés, namely the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Hyundai Tiburon.

Yes, they’re both about 15 years old. The mileage on the C-Class (190 375km versus 147 200km for the Tiburon) may be deemed high but, at a cost of just over R70 000, they’re both great deals.

Also, the C-Class, which was named the third most searched for a vehicle in the 2020 AutoTrader Car Industry Report, will be very easy to dispose of one day.

The same can be said of the Ford Ranger double-cab, which is listed at an affordable R95 000 mark. According to the same report, the more recent model is the most sold used car in South Africa.

The data reveals that it is even possible to acquire a low-mileage car in this price range. The 2013 Chevrolet Spark, with a mere 92 696km on the clock, is up for grabs for R84 053.
