Residents warned of coming cyclone
The SAWS warns of possible “flooding, damage to roads and bridges, as well as possible displacement of affected communities
BURGERSFORT – Residents of Sekhukhune District Municipality (SDM) are urged to be on high alert because of extreme rainfall that is expected on Sunday January 24.
The heavy rain is expected to continue to Monday, as forecast by the South African Weather Service (SAWS).
The SAWS warns of possible “flooding, damage to roads and bridges, as well as possible displacement of affected communities.” According to the SAWS, the impending rainfall in the eastern Lowveld and escapement of Limpopo, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal emanates from Cyclone Eloise that had already moved through parts of Mozambique.
“The District Disaster Management Centre of SDM has prepared itself to respond and rescue residents who may be stranded in a possible disaster situation.
“Together with coordinators in all four local municipalities, the disaster management team will keep a close eye on the situation round the clock. “While every person is potentially vulnerable, those who live in wetlands, near streams and rivers must be on high alert,” said SDM spokesperson, Isaac Mahlakwane.
He said residents who stay in mud houses and those who put stones or heavy objects on their rooftops, are equally advised to be vigilant. Pedestrians should not cross rivers and motorists must not drive through submerged culverts and bridges.
He added, “Residents are requested to check on their neighbours and help provide alternative shelter when necessary and possible to do so.” In Tubatse, residents are encouraged to call the following personnel if they need assistance: Thomas Shai on 0798887246 or Philemon Maphutha 0768948722.
