Three killed at Annesley Andalusite Mine
Meanwhile, Tubatse SAPS’s Col Mahlathini Ngele confirmed to Steelburger/Lydenburg News that four suspects had been arrested in relation to this incident.
BURGERSFORT – Three people were killed when community members from Segorong protested at the Annesley
Andalusite Mine on Monday.
The deceased were confirmed to be Prince Ngododo, Gift Malesa, security officers at the mine, and Andries Moeng, a community member of Segorong Village.
According to the Tubatse SAPS, they are currently investigating three counts of murder and a robbery, after the angry villagers invaded the mine at about 09:30 last Monday.
“ It is alleged that about 50 community members from Segorong Village arrived at Annesley’s mine entrance and approached security officers.
“They demanded to see the mine management in order to talk about procurement at the mine.
“Suddenly, the community forced entry and the security tried to stop them. The community overpowered the security officers and disarmed them of a rifle and a nine-millimetre pistol.
In the process, one male security officer (Ngododo) was shot dead and another officer, Gift Malesa, was seriously wounded and transported to Dilokong Hospital for medical treatment, Malesa later died at the hospital” alleged one community member who chose to remain anonymous.
Moeng, a member of the community, was allegedly shot by security guards and transported to Penge Clinic where he died on arrival.
The firearms were recovered after the community members dropped these on the ground as they were
running away from the police who were responding to the incident.
