Fly-Thru a sight to behold

The colourful building with cartoon-like drawings is an instant invitation to stop and enjoy a refreshment or meal.

Vehicles lined up around the block on Wednesday June 9 to support Lydenburg’s first drive-thru restaurant. For the past few months, residents speculated about the new development at the Swembad Centre on the corner of Viljoen and Potgieter streets. The new Chicken Licken Fly-Thru was a welcome sight to behold. Chicken Licken was founded in South Africa by George Sombonos in 1980. Today this brand has more than 247 outlets in South Africa and 12 in Botswana.

Chantal Sombonos-van Tonder took over as CEO in 2016 and under her leadership, Chicken Licken has been named brand of the year for two consecutive years in 2019 and 2020. Sombonos-van Tonder won the 2020 Marketing Leadership Award at the Loerie Awards. Chicken Licken’s food is positioned as a more affordable option than that of its main competitors in South Africa, and is not only famous for its spicy chicken, but also home to “hot wings”, a South African favourite.
