Five months of resurfacing of major thoroughfare commences
A road reconstruction project is underway in Voortrekker Street. Thaba Chweu Local Municipality (TCLM) announced this project on Tuesday September 7 and it commenced that same day.
The top layer of the current tar surface is being removed and replaced with a new one. “This project is long overdue and will restore the structure of the road as well as extend its life cycle. There have been some delays stemming from disruptions by some community members demanding subcontracting jobs,” said Themba Sibiya, TCLM’s communication manager. The DA in Lydenburg welcomed the reconstruction project. “We have been concerned about the condition of Voortrekker Street for the past few years. We are aware that TCLM wants to improve the road infrastructure, but we are concerned that the project was delayed. TCLM applied for the grant to upgrade Voortrekker Street from the department of cooperative governance and traditional affairs Ehlanzeni in 2020.

The grant was approved by the end of June. TCLM waited for the new financial year to commence on July 1 to start construction,” said Spiros Couvaras, DA councillor. For the next few months, motorists can turn either left or right at the Voortrekker and Barac Streets (Spar-O-Rama corner) four-way-stop as they drive towards the Long Tom Pass and The Heads from the central business district. “The plan will be subjected to review based on real-time traffic realities during the construction. We would like to appeal to motorists and members of the public to be patient and exercise caution during the construction period,” said Sibiya. The project is expected to be completed towards the end of January 2022.
