World Cup thriller enjoyed at Emnotweni
Argentina fans celebrated their nail-biting victory over a lacklustre French performance.

MBOMBELA – A small but enthusiastic crowd turned up for the Fifa World Cup final at Emnotweni Arena’s fan zone on Sunday.

With most fans choosing to view the world’s biggest sporting spectacle from home or their favourite local watering hole, the spectators at the arena had the two massive television screens to themselves.

Argentina fans were in high spirits by half-time when their team led by 2-0, thanks to the opening goal from Ángel Di María and a spot kick from football legend Lionel Messi. But the smattering of French fans found their voice after France equalised in the second half and Kylian Mbappe scored his now famous hat-trick.

A nerve-racking period of extra time held the crowd enthralled with near total silence prevailing during the ensuing penalty shoot-out.

Pundits hailed Argentina’s 4-2 win on penalties as well deserved, while France’s performance was often disappointingly lacklustre.

Back in Buenos Aires, hundreds of thousands of jubilant fans took to the streets to celebrate their team’s victory in what is now seen as one of the greatest World Cup football finales ever staged.
