Hawks seize chrome worth thousands at Atok

Chrome stockpiles with an estimated value of over R250 000 were seized.

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation is continuing to deal with the scourge of illegal mining by regularly conducting multidisciplinary sting operations in Limpopo.

This follows another successful multidisciplinary disruptive operation between the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation, the National Intervention Unit, the State Security Agency and Samancor Mine at Atok village in the Sekhukhune area on January 26.

Chrome stockpiles with an estimated value of over R250 000 were seized.

No suspects were arrested after the zama-zamas fled the scene.

According to Limpopo Hawks spokesperson Capt Matimba Maluleke more disruptive operations are going to be conducted in the affected areas.

Provincial commissioner of police in Limpopo Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe warned community members to desist from engaging in illegal mining activities as they are against the law and dangerous.
