Dr George Oduah performed Mbombela’s first minimally invasive spinal fusion, a breakthrough for trauma care in Mpumalanga.
In a major medical breakthrough for Mpumalanga, Dr George Oduah has successfully performed Mbombela’s first minimally invasive multi-level spinal fusion using the cutting-edge Medtronic CD Horizon Longitude Percutaneous Fixation System.
This landmark procedure ushers in a new era of advanced trauma care and spinal surgery for the region.
The patient, a middle-aged woman, was brought to Kiaat Private Hospital following a severe motor vehicle accident. She was suffering from intense mid-back pain, and an MRI revealed an unstable compression fracture at her T12 vertebra. Without immediate intervention, this injury could have led to permanent spinal instability or paralysis.
Recognising the urgency, Oduah acted swiftly, scheduling surgery without delay. In a two-hour procedure, he performed a posterolateral spinal fusion from T10 to L2. Utilising advanced percutaneous techniques, the surgery minimised tissue damage and significantly sped up the recovery process.

“This was a high-stakes trauma case,” said Oduah. “Thanks to the precision of the CD Horizon Longitude system, we stabilised the spine through small incisions, minimised operative trauma, and mobilised the patient within 24 hours.”
The results were remarkable. The patient was able to get up and walk on the very first day after her surgery – an outcome that is extremely rare in traditional, open spinal fusion procedures.
The Medtronic CD Horizon Longitude system, used for the first time in Mbombela, allows surgeons to perform complex, multi-level spinal fixation with enhanced control and minimal invasiveness. Its successful application in this case signals that residents of Mpumalanga no longer need to travel outside the province to access world-class surgical options.
This isn’t just a win for one patient, it’s a win for the entire community,” Oduah added. “We’re showing that advanced spine trauma care is possible right here in Mbombela.”
Oduah extended his gratitude to the dedicated team at Kiaat Private Hospital, emphasising that the achievement was a collective effort. “This milestone was only possible because of the dedication, skill, and support of our surgical team and leadership. I’m proud to be part of a hospital that embraces innovation and puts patients first.”
As minimally invasive techniques continue to revolutionise surgery, Oduah’s pioneering work stands as a testament to innovation, urgency, and a steadfast commitment to patient-centred care.
