Space-for-five new Jeep Grand Cherokee officially priced

Powertrain carries over from the Grand Cherokee L, but at a lesser price and with reduced dimensions.

Initially not part of the local model roll-out just under a year ago, Stellantis South Africa has officially detailed the five-seat Jeep Grand Cherokee it bills as its most technologically advanced and luxurious generation ever made.

Dimensions

Joining the seven-seat, extended wheelbase Grand Cherokee L, but still mounted on the same Giorgio platform as the Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio, as well as the Maserati Grecale, the five-seat Grand Cherokee measures 4 912 mm long, 1 797 mm tall and 1 979 mm wide while riding on a 2 964 mm wheelbase.

Compared to the L, the five-seat Grand is a significant 292 mm shorter, 19 mm lower and 170 mm narrower, while riding on a 127 mm shorter wheelbase. Claimed boot space with the rear seats up is 1 068-litres.

Petrol only again

Known internally as the WL, a moniker the L also uses, the five-seat Grand Cherokee arrives in South Africa with the same trim level denominators spanning three models; Limited, Overland and Summit Reserve, with powered by the stalwart normally aspirated 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 petrol engine.

The sole powerunit available as a result of a turbodiesel never being considered due to Jeep’s electrification focus, the big displacement bent-six develops 210kW/344Nm, three kilowatts and nine Newton Metres down on the old WK2 Grand Cherokee, delivered to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

Off-road hardware

Claimed fuel consumption is 9.9 L/100 km with only the Limited being privy to the Quadra-Trac full-time four-wheel-drive system and electronic transfer case.

Reserved for the Overland and Summit Reserve is the Quadra-Trac II that offers a Lock function, as well as the Quadra-Lift air suspension that raises ground clearance from the standard 214 mm to as much as 287 mm in the Off-Road 2 setting.

In addition, both the Overland and Summit Reserve are taller than the limited, 1 801 mm versus 1 797 mm, and feature a wading of 610 mm compared to 530 mm.

Braked trailer towing capacity across all models is the same at 2 813 kg, with all three also getting the Select-Terrain Management system with five modes; Auto, Sport, Snow, Rock and Mud/Sand, plus the front axle disconnect aimed at improving fuel consumption.

As on the L, an electronic limited slip differential is standard fare on the Summit Reserve only.

As for breakover, departure and approach angles, the Limited encompasses the following:

  • Breakover: 19.1-degrees;
  • Approach: 20.5-degrees;
  • Departure: 26.6-degrees

Respective angles for the Overland and Summit Reserve as follows:

  • Breakover: 24.4-degrees;
  • Approach: 30.1-degrees;
  • Departure: 28.4-degrees
