‘Small big deal’ new Volvo EX30 teased ahead of 7 June reveal

All-electric junior sibling of the EX90 had, originally, been lined-up for unveiling on 15 June.

Volvo has forwarded the launch date of its new EX30 to 7 June, after initially confirming the 15th of the same month as the reveal date for the junior sibling of the EX90.

A model that had been on the Chinese-owned Swedish automaker’s drawing board since 2019, then still called the XC30, the EX30 will slot-in below the XC40 and as its name indicates, derive motivation solely from an electric powertrain as per the brand’s all-electric switch by 2030.

Younger buyers are key

Set to be a key model for Volvo as it targets a younger audience, in addition to aiding to its target of obtaining a 50/50 sales split between hybrid, mild-hybrid and electric vehicles by 2025, the EX30 will also be sold around a subscription-based service as this presents a more attractive proposition to first-time buyers than outright ownership according to company CEO, Jim Rowan.

“We’d like to get some more younger people into the brand. [EX30] will be a really nice price point I think for an entry point – very safe, decent range, good size still but smaller than the XC40,” the Brit, who replaced Håkan Samuelsson in January last year, was quoted by Australia’s carsales.com.au as saying earlier this year.

What to expect

Unlike the XC40, which rides on the Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) platform still designed around combustion engines, the EX30 will ride on a variation of the new Scalable Production Architecture 2 (SPA2) that underpins the EX90, with added input from fellow Geely-owned marque, Lynk & Co.

Compared to the EX90, the EX30 will provide seating for five instead of seven, have a range of less than 600 km and significantly less power than its sibling’s 380kW/910Nm.

Based on the latest teaser video, aptly called “something small is coming”, the EX30 appears noticeably smaller and more compact than the XC40, though in a reversal of the EX90, it sports a sloping coupe-style roofline similar to the also all-electric C40 Recharge.

Also retained are the signature Volvo SUV vertical taillight cluster, the same albeit shorter bonnet as the EX90 and Swedish flag tags on the seats.

More details likely

For now, no further details about the EX30 are known, although chances are that more in the shape of teasers will be divulged before next month.

At the same time, it remains to be seen whether the automaker will offer the EX30 in South Africa where 100% EV sales currently consists of the C40 Recharge, as well as the P6 and P8 versions of the XC40 Recharge.
