Petrol gone as JLR makes surprise Discovery Sport range change

Range reduction more than likely as a result of the next generation due to be revealed in 2025.

Despite announcing prices of the facelift “Land Rover” Discovery Sport in June, renamed automaker JLR has revealed updated sticker prices for the aging model, now without the option of the previously available turbocharged petrol engine.

Diesel or hybrid

Still resplendent with five or seven seats, and reportedly due to be replaced by 2025, the oldest model in the former Jaguar-Land Rover’s range retains the same exterior and interior revisions applied three months ago, but in a new streamlined line-up.

In this instance, the petrol P250 bows out along with the special edition Urban trim level, leaving the Dynamic SE and Dynamic HSE as the sole derivatives available.

The departure of the petrol, whose 2.0-litre turbocharged Ingenium mill produced 184kW/365Nm, hasn’t resulted in any changes to the continuing D200 and plug-in hybrid P300e, both available in the mentioned trim grades.

Hooked to a nine-speed automatic gearbox, the 2.0-litre turbodiesel Ingenium in the D200 makes 147kW/430Nm, while the P300e combines a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol with a 14.9-kWh lithium-ion battery pack driving an electric motor for a total system output of 227kW/540Nm.

Mated to a model specific eight-speed automatic ‘box, the P300e has a claimed all-electric range of 61 km and according to JLR South Africa, requires a waiting time of 30 minutes from 0-80% using a DC fast charger.

Spec

As before, both the D200 and P300e are equipped with the Terrain Response 2 off-road system and the transparent ClearSight Ground View monitor, separate climate control on seven-seat models, a digital instrument cluster, new centre console and gear lever, electric tailgate plus the updated 11.4-inch Pivi Pro infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

New 19-inch gloss black or diamond-turned alloy wheels, 21-inch gloss black alloys as well as a new colour called Varesine Blue rounds the Discovery Sport’s key changes off.

Price

Now available for ordering, all four models in the streamlined Discovery Sport’s range feature a five-year/100 000 km warranty and maintenance plan with their respective sticker price, plus an eight-year battery warranty in the case of the P300e.
