Monster Edition 507 impresses
Mercedes-Benz's AMG division is not always given the credit they deserve for the cars they bring to market.
They not only bring you their flagship performance models, they also bring you a host of limited edition special models of the same basic car.
And this is exactly the case with the C63 AMG. In standard guise it is built to stand up against the likes of Audi’s RS4 and RS5 and BMW’s M3. Neither of which by the way have ventured to give us any hardcore models since BMW did their Frozen Edition.
It depends on how deep your pockets are but you can get an improved version of the C63 AMG when you opt for the performance pack, which when we tested was a little quicker than the standard car. You can go totally crazy and opt for a C63 Black Series that will blow your mind and do over 300 km/h straight from the factory.
And now if you have
R1 121 616 lying around you can opt for a monster grumpy Edition 507 Coupe as tested here or a
R 1 093 416 sedan version that puts you right in the middle of the AMG C63 party.
Running the legendary and soon to be retired (sadly so) AMG 6.2 litre naturally aspirated V8 engine but with an increased output that sees 507 horsepower (373 kW) being produced along with a 610 Nm of torque thanks to a technology transfer from the SLS AMG.
This means you get forged pistons, connecting rods and a lightweight crankshaft, an AMG high-performance composite braking system with red callipers, an AMG driver’s package and a new engine control system that perfectly rounds off the implemented powertrain upgrades, all fitted as standard.
What this translates into on the road is a very intimidating sounding AMG that also hits hard at the test track. In a mere 4.78 seconds the 0-100km/h is done, the quarter mile is done in 13.01 seconds at 180.96km/h, the longer 1km sprint is covered in 23.16 seconds at 236.40km/h, while the cars speed limiter does not intervene to stop the fun until you are running 289.53km/h true with the clock reading 292km/h.
This is one car that has the go to match the show. And for this you get a bonnet that originates from the C63 AMG Coupe Black Series.
Two openings in the distinctive aluminium bonnet help with expelling engine heat.
New AMG light-alloy cross-spoke wheels with 235/35 19 tyres in the front and 255/30 19 tyres at the rear are another exclusive feature of the Edition 507.
This is the most fun C-Class I have driven since the C-Class Black Series. It has street cred in buckets and the performance to back it up.
