Despite being all of 11 years old, hybrid technology makes SUV a superb offering.

While Volvo’s future is heading for complete eventual electrification, the updated XC90 shows that the Swedish carmaker values the role of hybrid technology for the time being.
The all-electric EX90 was largely expected to replace the 11-year-old XC90, yet the manufacturer decided to rather spruce up the latter instead of kicking it to the kerb. And while the refresher comprises styling and tech updates, the mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) have been carried over.
“Alongside the fully electric EX90, the new XC90 gives South Africans the choice between advanced hybrid capability and pure electric driving, ensuring our brand is ready to meet both today’s needs and tomorrow’s expectations,” says Grant Locke, managing director of Volvo Car South Africa.
“The XC90 has always been a cornerstone of Volvo’s success in South Africa. With this latest update, it remains a luxury SUV that families can trust for space, comfort, and safety, while introducing the technology and efficiency that define our next chapter.”

Look into my crystal gear lever

Two hybrid powertrains
As expected from the manufacturer who patented seat belts, safety and driver assistance systems in the Volvo XC90 is comprehensive. The impressive list includes Adaptive Cruise Control, Blind Spot Monitoring and Lane Keep Assist.
The two powertrains on offer are the mild-hybrid B5 and the PHEV T8. The 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine in the B5 with 48-volt electrical assistance produces 183kW of power and 350Nm of torque. The twist goes to all four wheels via eight-speed Geartronic transmission.
The T8 combines a supercharged and turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol mill with an 18.8-kWh battery and rear electric motor for a combined output of 340kW/709Nm. It has a claimed all-electric range of 70km.

Best of both worlds
Our recent short little launch drive around the Cape Winelands didn’t tell us anything we didn’t know already about the quality of the Volvo XC90’s ride. By offering a choice of power source, the PHEV can be an absolute rocket in hybrid mode the minute and the serene backdrop of a luxurious day spa in all-electric mode the next.
Adaptive dampers and air suspension contributes to a plush ride that not only impresses on the smooth stretches around the Cape, but is also set to iron out the imperfections on Jozi’s poorly maintained tarmac.
Despite its age, the Volvo XC90 is as good as it always was. And a prime example that hybrid cars can co-exist with all-electric vehicles. Especially in world that did not electrify as fast as initially anticipated.
