Daily News Update: Crime wardens, discarded fetuses, Malema defends Putin

Here’s your morning news update: An easy-to-read selection of our top stories.


In today’s daily news update: 3 000 crime-fighting wardens will be deployed to crime hotspots in Gauteng, and Malema tells Winde he’d “meet his maker” if he arrests Putin.

Meanwhile, police are investigating cases of abandonment after two discarded fetuses were found discarded in Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal.

Lesufi’s ‘crime prevention wardens’

Starting today, more than 3 000 crime prevention wardens will be taking to the streets of Gauteng, protecting residents.

The task force will be deployed to crime hotspots in the province.

According to Premier Panyaza Lesufi, these ‘young, fit and agile’ wardens will be on patrol 24/7, working alongside the police to curb crime, corruption, vandalism and lawlessness.

Malema: Winde wants to meet his maker’

EFF commander-in-chief Julius Malema cautioned Western Cape Premier Alan Winde that he would face consequences if he laid hands on Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Malema’s warning was made during a clean-up campaign in Soweto yesterday, in response to Winde’s earlier threat to arrest Putin in the event of a visit to Cape Town.

“I don’t think the premier of the Western Cape knows what he’s talking about. If he wants to meet his maker, he must try and touch Putin.”

Discarded fetuses

Two cases of abandonment are currently being investigated by the police after two fetuses were discovered discarded.

One fetus was found in Middelburg, Mpumalanga, and the other in Terrance Park, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).

Residents who have CCTV cameras are urged to review their footage and report any relevant information that may assist with the investigation.

DA KZN Congress

Francois Rodgers, the KZN Provincial Leader of the DA, was re-elected for another term during the party’s provincial congress at the Durban International Convention Centre on Saturday.

Rodgers, who also serves as the DA Member of the Provincial Legislature (MPL) in KZN, has previously held positions such as the party’s former provincial chairperson and KZN chief whip.

Meanwhile, Dean Mcpherson defeated Diane Kohler Barnard to be re-elected as provincial chairperson. Kohler Barnard only received 136 (36%) votes compared to Mcpherson’s 309 (69%).
