Drugs worth over R200k found in a hearse in Kimberley

The two male suspects are expected to appear at the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court.


Two alleged drug dealers were arrested in Kimberley, Northern Cape, after police discovered and seized Mandrax tablets with an estimated street value R180,000 and bags of Tik valued at R45,000 in a hearse.

According to police reports, an undisclosed amount of cash believed to be the proceeds of drug sales was also confiscated.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Sergio Kock said when the team approached the parking area of the North Cape Mall, they found the stationary silver Chrysler hearse in the parking area, which they searched.

“Preliminary information indicates the vehicle belongs to a local funeral undertaker in Roodepan, Kimberley.

“The 36-year-old male owner of the funeral undertaker, who was also the driver at the time of the incident as well as the 34-year-old male passenger were arrested and charged for dealing in drugs,” said Kock.

The two male suspects are expected to appear at the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court.

Kock has assured the public that the police in the province will continue to ensure that there is no room for drug dealers to operate in the community.

He also encouraged the community to continue to be the eyes and ears of the police and to report any criminal activity.

“Information can be reported anonymously via the MySAPS App or callers may tip the police by calling Crime Stop on 08600 10111. Tipsters may opt to remain anonymous.”

R48 million drug bust

Last month, police seized cocaine worth an estimated R48 million at a premises in the Western Cape.

It is understood members attached to the Bishop Lavis Saps acted on information received about a possible drug consignment at the premises situated at the Airport Industria.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie said at the time that the cocaine bust had dealt a major blow to the lucrative drug trafficking trade.

“Saps members, with the assistance of metro police and other law enforcement agencies pounced on the premises on Tuesday, 18 April, and a search ensued. A container was discovered with 16 boxes containing 140 sealed bricks of cocaine with an estimated value of R48 million.

“The members seized the find weighing approximately 1kg each and booked it in as evidence,” Pojie said.
