DStv and Ster-Kinekor in hilarious, epic ‘Game of Thrones’ twar

The majority of those on Twitter feel the cinema won, and 'bodied' their home entertainment rivals.

Things got heated – although that’s a bad choice of words in this case – between broadcast satellite service DStv and cinema company Ster-Kinekor on Twitter over the past week.

It all began when a Twitter user asked Ster-Kinekor’s official Twitter account – most likely jokingly – if they would be screening the long-awaited upcoming final season of the hugely popular HBO fantasy series Game of Thrones.

Ster-Kinekor responded with a simple “Hmmm”.

DStv’s official account, meanwhile, stepped in and replied to the original tweet to say “askies” to the cinema company and boast about the fact that you can catch the show “as it breaks fresh from the USA” if you’re a DStv subscriber.

DStv then responded to Ster-Kinekor’s “Hmmm” by inviting Twitter users to watch the repeats of Game of Thrones on Showmax, which is when the real shade began to be thrown.

“And in other news, you can catch the latest movies at a Ster-Kinekor theatre near you, a whole year before they’ll play on DStv,” was the cinema company’s clap back.

DStv’s next tweet was a simple reminder to Ster-Kinekor that Game of Thrones could not be seen on the big screen.

“Hmm … If only you’d stop playing the same movies 500 times … Good thing people can come to us for fresh movie releases. Thank us later,” was the Ster-Kinekor comeback.

“I’d say the same thing if I made people watch movies inside a fridge,” DStv tweeted, referencing the infamously cold air-conditioning you’ll find in South African cinemas. They added the hashtag #TooMuchSnow and a pic of Jon Snow in frigid conditions looking upset, bringing it back to the Game of Thrones theme.

“Not as cold as a repeat,” was Ster-Kinekor’s final word.

While opinions differ as to who won the roast battle, the majority of Twitter users seem to feel Ster-Kinekor deserves to sit on the iron throne, as they “bodied” their home entertainment rivals.

The eighth and final season of Game of Thrones will premiere on April 14.
