Limpopo traffic officer killed in alleged hit-and-run

Thabane Nchabeleng, 28, appeared in the Sekhukhune Magistrates’ Court for culpable homicide on Monday.

Nchabeleng is accused of killing a traffic officer in an alleged hit-and-run last Friday, Steelburger/Lydenburg News reports.

Limpopo police spokesman Lt-Col Moatshe Ngoepe said officer Masedi Mabusela, 48, was on official point duties and had tried to stop a speeding vehicle, but the driver did not comply. He said Mabusela, who worked for the Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality’s traffic station, was hit, and the driver sped off.

Ngoepe said Mabusela’s partner, who was at the scene when the incident happened, immediately gave chase and pursued the vehicle up to Strydkraal, where the driver was arrested and handed over to the police.

“Mabusela was immediately taken to the hospital for medical attention, but he later succumbed to his injuries,” Ngoepe confirmed.

A blood test was taken, and the preliminary investigation revealed that the driver was intoxicated.

Other charges against Nchabeleng include hit-and-run and driving a motor vehicle while under the influence of liquor. Nchabeleng was not granted bail, and the case has been postponed to May 9.
