Mokwena needs time, but Pirates supporters want results

I think many people look at the squad in coach Rulani Mokwena’s disposal at Orlando Pirates and start asking themselves, what the hell is wrong with these guys?

Many don’t really know why this team is not among the top teams on the log standings in this stage of the league, or better yet, why they haven’t lifted any trophy so far. I mean, you look at the talent at Pirates and you think to yourself, this is a championship-winning squad that any coach would love to assemble.

But again, as I think about it thoroughly and take a closer look at things, talent alone doesn’t really win you titles and it takes hard work and building the right combinations to get your team to the top. It might take years, months or less for one to get it right and I think that is where Mokwena is struggling.

As I recall, it wasn’t an overnight thing for coach Pitso Mosimane to have one of the strongest teams in the continent which went on to win the precious Caf Champions League and the Caf Super League. When Mosimane first arrived at Downs, things didn’t immediately run smoothly for him, but as time went by, Mosimane did manage to get things right and his team went on to conquer Africa.

I mean, look at Downs now, they are still one of the most feared sides in Africa and the Absa Premiership. Yes, there will be games which they will lose now and then, but the point is, they are still a formidable side.

For Pirates, the club has managed to bring some quality into the team over the last few years and I believe it is only a matter of time until Pirates will be a force to be reckoned with – once Rulani gets his combinations right.

The sad part for Rulani is, at a team like Pirates, one doesn’t really have the luxury of time and the club’s supporters are hungry and eager to see results. Already there are few supporters who are calling for him to step down, but luckily for him, there are those supporters who still have faith in him.

I mean, as the old adage goes, “Rome was not built in one day”, but Pirates fans want to see that building firm and strong in no time.

And to be honest, if things don’t change any time soon, Mokwena will fall on the list of coaches who came to Pirates and left without making a mark.
