Hout Bay roads open following housing protest

In March, a fire ripped through Imizamo Yethu and about 650 residents lost their homes.


The violent protest action in Imizamo Yethu in the Hout Bay area of the Western Cape quelled on Sunday night and the roads leading into Hout Bay were reopened.

In March, a fire ripped through Imizamo Yethu and about 650 residents lost their homes.

This weekend, the residents who were moved to a local sports field while the City of Cape Town rebuilds their homes protested about the alleged slow speed of the City’s rebuilding process.

EWN reports that the group of the residents grew angry and torched the temporary housing material and protested at a traffic circle on the Hout Bay Main Road.

It was further reported that Cape Town Mayor Patricia De Lille would meet with the residents when their violent demonstrations had been suspended.
