A moving sermon was given by Pastor Johnson Bavu who said Magaqa told him that he had seen God and asked him to spare his life.

Magaqa was laid to rest at Umthimkhulu in Kwa-Zulu Natal today.

His funeral was attended by top politicians including Malusi Gigaba, Sihle Zikalala, Lindiwe Sisulu, NEC members Bheki Cele, Nomvula Mokonyane and ANC treasurer general Zweli Mkhize

Magaqa succumbed to his injuries after being shot 15 times outside a store in the area where he was a councilor on July 13. Two men who were also shot with Magaqa are fighting for their lives in hospital.

There was a heavy presence of soldiers as the funeral began in the morning. The hearse was accompanied by church members who also sang as the hearse was led into the service.

A tribute by Magaqa’s wife Gugu was read out. In it she said: “You were far amazing than anything I have ever prayed for. I truly believe that God placed us in each other’s lives.  He helped us find each other.

“I know as we were navigating this adventure together, we were learning every single day to love like God.”

A close friend of Magaqa, Less Stuta gave a stirring speech in which he explained how Magaqa had wanted to expose tender corruption in the municipality.
