It is alleged that the driver abandoned the taxi and is currently on the run. Residents are burning tyres on scene, saying: “Enough is enough with speeding taxis who skip red robots in the community.”

The fuming community members claim that this was not the first incident of speeding taxis causing fatal crashes in the area.

Ward 11 PR councillor Shontel De Boer, who went to the scene following the tragic crash, said seeing the three bodies was heart-wrenching.

It has been confirmed that the deceased teenagers attended Newlands East Secondary School.

The school principal and some education department officials were also at the scene.
