Suspected thief electrocuted at City Power substation

It is suspected the deceased was electrocuted while trying to dismantle and steal material inside the substation.


City Power workers discovered a body of a person at their substation near Steeledale on Sunday.

It is suspected the deceased was electrocuted trying to dismantle and steal material inside the substation, reports Southern Courier.

Working tools were found in his possession. The identity of the deceased is not known, and it is not yet clear if he was acting alone.

City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena said: “City Power is again warning people against trying to vandalise and dismantle our infrastructure, as this is not only costly to the city, but often leads to death or injury.”

The scene was handed over to the police, who are conducting further investigations.

Moffat View communications officer Capt. Jeff Phora said: “We can confirm that we are investigating a case of inquest following the death of an unknown man. The deceased was wearing navy blue sneakers, purple [tracksuit] and a brown jacket. The deceased was declared dead on the scene by paramedics.”
