PICS: Seven arrested, money recovered after suspected Joburg cash-in-transit heist

In another incident, two suspects were arrested after hijacking a white Audi.


Three R5 rifles, one AK47, one 9mm pistol, live ammunition, and money were reportedly seized after a shootout between seven suspects and police on Byron Street, near Lombardy East in Johannesburg on Friday. Police were driving around in Ekurhuleni when they saw seven men who were suspected of robbing a car belonging to a cash-in-transit company, chased after them, and cornered them, Daily Sun reported.

The publication further reported that two people – a bystander and security guard – were rushed to hospital after being shot.

Gauteng police spokesperson Brigadier Mathapeli Peters told the publication: “A BMW X5, a BMW sedan, a VW Polo, and a Toyota Yaris were also seized. A Mercedes-Benz was also recovered in Sebeza which was believed to have been used in the robbery.”

Hawks would reportedly investigate the incident.

In another incident, two suspects were arrested by the JMPD Reaction Unit on Sunday after hijacking a white Audi in Houghton Estate.

JMPD spokesperson Wayne Minnaar said: “The officers received a tipoff at 6pm from the owner that he was hijacked at gunpoint by two male suspects and that he received information that his car was in the Braamfontein area.

“The officers spotted the hijacked vehicle in Owl Street Auckland Park and shot the one suspect in the left leg when he pointed the officers with a firearm.”

The injured suspect was under police guard at the Charlotte Maxeke hospital while the second suspect was detained at the Brixton Police station for armed hijacking.
