LISTEN: Karabo Mokoena recounts how Sandile ‘framed’ her for physical assault

By Citizen Reporter

In an emotional episode of eNCA’s Checkpoint, Karabo Mokoena’s story was told through the voices of her mother, Lolo, brother Lebogang and friend Lebo Mkhize.

All three spoke of how they found out Karabo had been in an abusive relationship with Sandile Mantsoe, her boyfriend of seven months. It was only towards the end of their relationship, however, that they realised how serious the extent of the physical abuse was.

Mantsoe had allegedly beaten Karabo on several occasions, and after she had opened a case against him for physical assault two days later, he apparently retaliated and opened a counter charge of abuse against Karabo.

“I think two days after he hit me, he was robbed in Braam, fell and was grazed, and went to the police station, and told me that it was me that assaulted him. So I didn’t have strength for him, I was like, wow. You know, if someone can go to that extent …

“While he was hitting me, I think I fell on top of his car, and it got dented, and he told the police that I damaged his car,” said Karabo.

She added she did not have the energy to pursue the case Mantsoe had opened against her and just resolved that “God would deal with him”.
