Conned flat hunters all move into the same flat at the same time

The conman put up posters advertising a flat to rent on Kempton Road.

Kempton Park police detectives are looking for a man in connection with several fraud-related charges against him.

The man, known as Lebogang, is alleged to have scammed a group of people by “renting out” the same flat to all of them, Kempton Express reported.

According to police spokesperson Captain Jethro Mtshali, Lebogang put up posters – which included himself as the contact person – along Monument Road, advertising a flat to rent on Kempton Road.

“One of the victims who saw the advert alleged that on May 25 they phoned the number on the advert and the person who answered was a ‘Lebogang’,” Mtshali explained.

“Upon meeting with Lebogang, he was shown the said flat on Kempton Road. The victim immediately paid Lebogang a rental fee of R1 900. Lebogang said the victim could occupy the flat on June 1.”

Upon arriving at the flat, the victim found other people waiting there for Lebogang. They had also paid the same amount to him and had also been promised they could move in on the same day.

When they all tried to contact him, he was nowhere to be found and his cellphone was off.

“However, one of the victims who had managed to take a photo of Lebogang without him being aware of it, gave the photo to the police. Some of the victims then registered fraud cases against him.”

Police appeal to anyone else who may have been scammed by the same man to come forward. Police also appeal to anyone who recognises him to step forward with the information.

Anyone with information can contact Detective/Sgt Bheki Sibisi on 011 393 8754 or 074 417 3158.
