These were Sindiso Magaqa’s last words

Jabulile Msiya recalls Sindiso Magaqa's last moments before he was shot.

The ANC councillor in Umzimkhulu, Jabulile Msiya and Nontsikelelo Mafa were alongside Magaqa when they were attacked.

Msiya was speaking at the Moerane Commission into political violence in KZN on Wednesday, and she recalled the former ANC Youth League secretary-general’s last words.

Magaqa told them “not to move”, as they were going to be shot at.

“Because of the respect we have for him, we complied. I could feel bullets penetrating in my lower limb, but I didn’t cry. Even him he didn’t cry at all in spite of the hail of bullets,” Msiya said.

Magaqa was shot with an AK-47 in July, and died in hospital in September, while his colleagues sustained wounds.

According to TimesLIVE, Msiya told the commission the trio saw two gun-toting men approaching the ML Mercedes-Benz they were in just before they sprayed them with bullets.

Magaqa and his colleagues were busy talking about a branch meeting held earlier the day at Ncambele Junior Secondary near Kokstad.

“When it happened, his words came flooding back,” Msiya said.

She continued to say Magaqa was seated in the driver’s seat while she and Nonsikelelo Mafa, also a ward councillor, were in the backseat.

After the shooting‚ Msiya managed to call for help‚ and a driver used Msiya’s car to take the injured Magaqa and Mafa to hospital.

“I was afraid the assailants would follow us to finish us off. I was relieved when police came to the hospital‚” she said.
